As shown in the introduction to the International Classification of Diseases-9,  the term has long been used as medical labels for diseases and procedures. But creating these rubrics — trying to imagine every possible scenario that will result in an assignment being labeled as a 1, 2, 3 or 4, or whatever terminology might stand for those numbers — can be both soul-crushing and time-consuming.

The classification response is a weighted judgement by the assessor taking all things into account at once; hence, holistic. In such cases it is better to incorporate the rubrics into conversation with the child than to give a mark on a paper.
